DAVID’S evening prayer to God expresses the sentiment of his devotion to the One alone that can keep him safe even as he sleeps. At this point in his walk with God, David is running for his life. He is a hunted man. Yet, as he reviews the day’s troubles, he can lay down in peace. The word peace being used on this occasion means ‘completeness.’ Listen to his prayer, I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
The peace that David experienced comes from a heart that trusts God intentionally. His confidence in God is real, and the result is peace. The battle still rages around him; however, he can rest calmly and quietly because he knows the night watcher, Jesus Christ, Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
What is disturbing your sleep? Is there someone you need to forgive? Are you not able to trust the Lord with your present circumstances? Is Satan playing mental gymnastics with your emotions? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, it’s time to make God your safe place. It’s time to shut off the evening news and late-night TV shows and turn to the One, the only One who can make you dwell in safety. His name is Jesus. You may have to turn and turn again and keep turning until you can lay down in peace and sleep because you trust in God, and He is your safe place. O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together. (Psalm 121:4; Psalm 4:8).
